National infrastructure projects in the UK

The biggest schemes in the country are decided nationally, not by your council: solar and wind farms, reservoirs, roads, railways, power lines and pipelines. Here they are, with each one's stage and site boundary.

34 projects in play in Wales, including 14 at pre-application.

How national projects are decided

Projects above certain sizes, such as a solar farm over 100 megawatts, a reservoir holding over 30 million cubic metres or a new motorway, are "nationally significant". The promoter consults locally, then applies for a development consent order. An independent panel examines the application and recommends a decision, and the Secretary of State decides. Councils are consulted but do not decide.

"In play" means at pre-application, in the formal process, or decided in the last three years.

Housing schemes, however large, are decided by the council. See the largest housing developments in planning.
