What the Register Covers

  • Listed buildings - Grade I and Grade II* listed buildings, and some Grade II buildings in certain areas.
  • Scheduled monuments - Archaeological sites of national importance.
  • Registered parks and gardens - Designed landscapes of special historic interest.
  • Registered battlefields - Sites of nationally important battles.
  • Protected wreck sites - Historically important shipwrecks.
  • Conservation areas - Areas of special architectural or historic interest.

Why It Matters for Planning

Heritage at risk status is a material consideration in planning decisions. Development proposals affecting heritage at risk sites may be viewed more favourably if they help secure the future of the asset, but must still be carefully assessed to ensure they do not cause harm to the heritage significance.
