Grades of Listing
- Grade I
- Buildings of exceptional interest. Only about 2% of listed buildings are Grade I.
- Grade II*
- Particularly important buildings of more than special interest. About 5.8% of listed buildings are Grade II*.
- Grade II
- Buildings of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them. The majority (over 91%) of listed buildings are Grade II.
How Listed Status Affects Planning
- Listed Building Consent - You need listed building consent for any works that would affect the character of the building as a building of special architectural or historic interest, whether internal or external.
- Setting considerations - Planning applications for development near a listed building must consider the impact on its setting.
- Curtilage structures - Pre-1948 structures within the curtilage of a listed building may also be protected.
- Enforcement - Carrying out unauthorised works to a listed building is a criminal offence.
