About Manchester City Council Planning Authority

Manchester City Council serves as the local authority for Manchester, a vibrant city in Greater Manchester, England. Established as an elected body in 1838, the council has undergone several reforms and has operated as a metropolitan borough council since 1974. It is responsible for delivering a wide range of local government services and has been a member of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority since 2011, playing a key role in regional governance and planning. The council is currently led by Bev Craig (Labour), who has held the position since 1 December 2021. Tom Stannard serves as Chief Executive since February 2025. The council comprises 96 councillors serving 4 years terms, with the most recent election held on 2 May 2024.
