Hertfordshire County Council ("HCC") proposes to obtain permission to construct a pedestrian bridge to replace the existing inadequate narrow footpaths on the existing road bridge on Station Road over the River Stort. The purpose of this work is to expand and enhance pedestrian routes along Station Road in Bishops Stortford town centre. Station Road forms a key pedestrian route and is situated directly between the town's bus and rail stations to the east, and the town centre shopping area to the west.As an alternative to widening the structure, an off-line foot/cycleway structure is proposed as it is likely to provide a more cost effective solution, be easier to install, and would be structurally independent of the existing bridge. It would also enable construction to be undertaken with minimal disruption to the functionality of the existing bridge.
