T8 - Horse Chestnut - Fell. The tree requires felling for the following reasons: Axial cankers, exposed sapwood decayed to a depth of 5-10cm, primary branch at 4m has failed leaving a large region of rot and decay, cankers and missing bark on North West side of dominant stem at 5-9m, and heavy thinning of peripheral crown on dominant stem and significant deterioration since previous survey. As Horse Chestnut does not have a distinct heartwood and relatively poor resistance to decay, failure of the dominant stem is plausible before the next formal survey. Removal of this stem alone would severely unbalance the tree visually and biomechanically. As such the tree should be removed as a matter of priority. In addition, the location of the tree next to a sports ground and benches etc. increases the chance of a risk to life should the tree fail.
