A Tree Risk Assessment was undertaken in summer 2019 and subsequently the avenue has suffered some further damage. The sketch plan sets out the numbering of the trees 500-578 (which includes a number of dead trees) and the report recommends action required for each tree. The works include removal of limbs where they are causing the trees to be unbalanced and potentially hazardous; reducing height; and taking out crowns where required. The current plan is not to remove any live trees and instead to leave the veteran trees in place subject to review. Subsequent to the report, we have sought further guidance on the ecological value of the dead and decaying trees along with fallen trees and branches in order to maximise the ecological value of the trees. This guidance doesn't change the proposed plan for live trees as set out in the report. In addition, we have taken guidance from Historic England on replanting of gaps and in order to provide a longer term solution, will take a patient approach to this and are expecting to replant with Oak in light of the problems facing Horsechestnut trees and in keeping with other local planting.
