Credentials

• ARCA MemberCheck the ARCA (Asbestos Removal Contractors' Association) register

ARCA is the trade association for asbestos removal contractors. Most asbestos removal work legally requires a licence from the Health and Safety Executive, and ARCA members are audited on how they carry it out. If asbestos may be present in your property, ask for a survey before any building work starts.

• Property Care Association: ContractorCheck the Property Care Association register

The Property Care Association is the trade body for damp proofing, timber treatment, basement waterproofing, structural repair and invasive weed control such as Japanese knotweed. Members are assessed before joining. If you are buying or selling, a PCA member's survey and guarantee are often what lenders and solicitors expect to see.

• TrustMark registeredNo. 2878027Check the register

TrustMark is the government-endorsed quality scheme for work in and around the home. Firms are checked by an approved scheme provider for technical competence, customer service and trading practices, and agree to the TrustMark code of conduct. Some government-funded energy efficiency schemes only pay for work done by TrustMark registered businesses.

Memberships can lapse, so check before work starts.
