Credentials

• ECA MemberCheck the ECA (Electrical Contractors' Association) register

The ECA is the main trade association for electrical and engineering contractors in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Firms are assessed on their technical ability before they can join and agree to the association's standards. It is a trade membership, separate from the certification that lets a firm self-certify work.

• NICEIC RegisteredCheck the NICEIC register

NICEIC assesses electrical contractors against the UK wiring regulations (BS 7671), including inspections of their work. Registered firms can self-certify notifiable electrical work under the Building Regulations in England and Wales, so you do not need to apply to building control separately. You should receive a certificate when the work is finished.

• TrustMark registeredNo. 621043Check the register

TrustMark is the government-endorsed quality scheme for work in and around the home. Firms are checked by an approved scheme provider for technical competence, customer service and trading practices, and agree to the TrustMark code of conduct. Some government-funded energy efficiency schemes only pay for work done by TrustMark registered businesses.

Memberships can lapse, so check before work starts.
