Credentials
The British Woodworking Federation is the trade association for joinery and woodworking manufacturers and installers, including windows, doors, stairs and fire doors. Members agree to its code of conduct. It also runs specialist certification schemes, such as for fire doors, which are worth asking about if they matter to your project.
- FENSA Registered InstallerCheck the FENSA register
FENSA is a competent person scheme for replacement windows and doors. A FENSA installer can self-certify that the work meets the Building Regulations, and the certificate is registered with your local authority. Keep it safe: buyers' solicitors usually ask for it when you sell the house.
- FMB memberCheck the register
The Federation of Master Builders is the largest trade association for small and medium-sized building firms in the UK. Members are vetted when they join and agree to a code of practice, and the FMB offers a route for resolving disputes between members and their customers.
Memberships can lapse, so check before work starts.
