Credentials
The ECA is the main trade association for electrical and engineering contractors in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Firms are assessed on their technical ability before they can join and agree to the association's standards. It is a trade membership, separate from the certification that lets a firm self-certify work.
- FENSA Registered InstallerCheck the FENSA register
FENSA is a competent person scheme for replacement windows and doors. A FENSA installer can self-certify that the work meets the Building Regulations, and the certificate is registered with your local authority. Keep it safe: buyers' solicitors usually ask for it when you sell the house.
- NICEIC RegisteredCheck the NICEIC register
NICEIC assesses electrical contractors against the UK wiring regulations (BS 7671), including inspections of their work. Registered firms can self-certify notifiable electrical work under the Building Regulations in England and Wales, so you do not need to apply to building control separately. You should receive a certificate when the work is finished.
Memberships can lapse, so check before work starts.
